Although I had designed book covers appropriate for children in previous projects, children's typography was not something I was familiar with. This meant I had to do more research into this specific area of typography. This involved analysing book pages of existing children's books in shops and also reading articles to help with finding a suitable typeface and gaining an understanding of typography that is suitable for children.
I really enjoyed taking on this project as it provided me with a greater knowledge for editorial design as although this was an area of design I was comfortable with, I had never created files that would be sent off to press. This meant I had to prepare the files and ensure the colour spaces were correct and all elements that were required for the printers to accurately print the books were included in the print ready files. As well as a physical book, this project also included the creation of an e-book that is available on Amazon alongside a paperback edition. I had never created an EPUB file before so it was an interesting skill to research into and gain knowledge about.
As this was part of a real jobs scheme, I wrote a blog post discussing the process.
